Do you let your kid eat sushi?

Another white American - it didn’t occur to me to not let them eat it, so my kids started eating sushi with us when they were really little. We did buy a lot of sides of edamame and rice just to keep costs somewhat reasonable, but so far they’ve been okay. I feel like no one bats an eye when they eat raw kale (washed, of course) or lunch meat, so why worry about sushi?

I'm not a fan of sushi. But 12 yo DD sometimes eats with friends, probably Cali Rolls. But I doubt that we would have allowed her to eat raw fish at younger age. You never know where it is sourced.

Never occurred to me that it would be a problem and it has not been a problem. I feel like I realized when pregnant that any food can be contaminated, so just go for it.

My wife and I are sushi fans. Our kid is 2 and we were wondering at what age is raw sushi/sashimi is appropriate? Google says over 5. Pediatrician says never.

Thoughts?

What was the reason given for this?

She’s very by the books and because it’s raw and the risk of food borne illnesses increases she said never while under her care. Clearly not happening but her opinion.

I think this is like, a ridiculous perspective to take. Why would the ped not at least suggest like, an eel roll or shrimp tempura. There is plenty of sushi that is not raw fish.

Regardless, like other posters it never occurred to me that this was something to withhold so we offer bites whenever we have it.

Probably the same government recommendations that you never eat runny eggs, steaks medium rare and stuff like that. Yes there is a small risk of food poisoning, but I don't mind.

We're not Japanese and started around 2. Good brain food!

OFFS. I would get a new pediatrician. Lord.

My kid started eating it at 5, and will eat an entire platter of sashimi if we didn't stop her. I won't let her eat the grocery store raw stuff, but maybe i should?

Yes, but only rolls so it limits their raw fish intake.

Same here. I would not trust this woman’s opinion at all.

It never occurred to me not to let my kids eat sushi, so they do. They are now mid-elementary school and can easily put away $100 worth between them if I would let them.

In the "before times" we would go to a local Asian buffet that had a sushi bar. I like to get it there and my son asked to try it. He mostly eats it there, but now, when he's in the mood, I wait for a shopping day at Wegman's and pick up a tray of like 9-10 pieces for about $13-15 and we share. He doesn't need a lot yet. But there are less expensive ways to get sushi. Full out sushi restaurants where it is expensive can be a treat rather than a regular thing.

They've eaten cooked sushi since they were little. Probably started eating raw fish when they were 10+.

There are millions of little kids in Japan. What do you suppose they are eating?
