What do you feed your dog and why?

We have a sensitive tummy dog who even had diarrhea on chicken and rice. Eventually after many tries she now eats Costco grain free kibble with a wet Nutro grain free topper and she devours it every time. I think kibble does a good job of overall nutrition and cleaner teeth but the topper is yummy to her and gets her excited to eat.

Royal Canin with a little chicken, rice, and water.

We use Purina Pro Plan Sport for our treeing walker coonhound. That is what our vet recommended. He does much better on a grain food, but definitely does have a sensitive stomach so I think I might try the salmon variety.

Just a thought, OP... our dog has pretty much stopped eating his food since the cicadas came out. Try as I might, I cannot keep him from eating them and he would rather eat cicadas than his food.

We feed Wellness Adult formula. Because that's what I've been feeding my dogs for 20 years because... I can't remember why I started with it!

But for the past few weeks, he has been eating cicadas and only about 1/3 of his normal kibble intake.

Raw fed.

Because I love my pets and consider them family. Only the best.

Hills Science Diet puppy food inside, cicadas outside

If it comforts you to think this go ahead and do it.

Raw diet. She’s incredibly healthy, fit and lean - and the best looking coat on any dog I’ve ever owned. Plus she LOVES mealtimes. Wish I’d done raw with all the dogs that came before.

Don’t be daft. There are dozens of veterinarians who promote raw diet and feed their own dogs raw. It also happens to be the way most dogs were fed before the advent of the industrialized commercial pet food industry. Or at least they were fed a balanced diet of home cooked human grade food.

I've got a picky dog, so I feed whatever he will actually eat. Right now it's a rotation of Eukanuba kibble, Purina Pro Plan kibble, and those two canned food brands. I also rotate in canned chicken breast.

My vet recommended Royal Canin (her favorite), Hill's Science Diet, or Purina Pro Plan. They regularly do feeding trials and have a lot of data and science behind their formulas. So I tried that. My dog was not interested. I've tried everything I can find including some of the "natural" brands. But I'm avoiding grain free too.

I wish I could just throw down some good quality kibble and call it a day. Every other dog I've ever had was fine with that. This one is not.

But they also died young back then, and it was the whole reason vets invented modern dog food formulas.

I believe modern dog food was invented during one of the wars to make it more convenient to feed the army dogs. Before that dogs were fed dinner scraps and bones, obviously some were fed better than others and so some lived longer. Kibble is convenient and will keep your dog alive, some kibbles better than others, but it is in no way the best thing you can be feeding your dog. I mean that's just common sense.

Np. I think the pp was refering to the part why they chose it. This makes the assumption that others who don't do raw diet don't care about their dogs and that it is the best for every dog. Most people want the best for their dog.
