When did you stock up in preparation?

I don’t understand why this is an issue.

+1. Unless OP is a single dad (which I suppose is possible), don't you already have pads and tampons on hand? And if not, you buy some and toss them in the bathroom cabinet until the time comes. It's not like they expire. Hell, my 90 year old grandma still has feminine products on hand in the guest bathroom (she's got a passel of daughters and granddaughters) just in case.

NP here but I didn’t have anything around because I got a Mirena after my youngest was born and hadn’t had a period in ten years. But also I wouldn’t have wanted to start my DD with what I did use to have on hand - super tampax.

Interesting. I exclusively use tampons. That’s it. I don’t think my 9yo would have been ready for that. What a myopic comment.

I had a hysterectomy when I had my child so no period products in this home.

Ok, well period products are not hard to come by. OP can buy a pack of pads next time she/he goes to the store and toss them under the sink. Done. Prepared.

My 12.5yo DD has no signs of puberty yet. I was late to get my period and appears she will be the same.

I see no need to stock up on anything. We have a cvs down the street. I told DD to let me know when supplies are needed. We are pretty open about things.

The day she started. We expected her to be late and I had intended to stock up a few weeks before she turned 12. She of course started a few weeks prior to my plan.

I'm not handing a 10yo super plus and ultra tampons right out of the gate. Since that's all I use, my supplies are worthless to a tween/young teen, and I expect that there are others in similar situations.

It is myopic if taken narrowly, but my point is that unless you live in the middle of nowhere, this is not something to “stock up” on. Every store sells some. And contrary to what you might believe, most mothers with adolescent girls have some type of pad in the house.

I’m worried my kid is going to start at sleepaway camp 😬

I got mine period underwear when she was 10 and went to sleep-away camp, just in case. She got her period about six months later.

Stock up? Will there be a shortage? Just go buy a box of pads when the time comes.

This is a weird thing to be so defensive/aggressive about. But I'm not sure why you think the bolded is true, that "most" people have them. I haven't purchased pads in decades, and from a few random conversations with my friends, I don't think they have either.

We agree on the answer to OP's question though: buy a pack of pads and put them under the bathroom sink now. No biggie.

Dont stock up before DD expresses a preference - I mean, have a few things on hand but don’t go crazy.
I use a cup with cloth pad or thinx backup. I had a few random disposable pads around and I started DD on those (and bought more). But she very quickly developed a personal preference for the cloth pads! I was surprised but glad that i hasn’t bought a ton of disposables right out of the gate.

Buy 1 package of small fit tampons and smaller pads and put it in the cabinet of the bathroom she uses.

+1 easy
And teach her the rolled up toilet paper trick in case it happens in school. And advise her ahead of time if the bathroom doesn’t have anything, go to the nurse.
