Do people use dogs to fill emotional needs?

Except now dogs are treated like if they were humans, and in the past they were treated like the animal that they are. For better or for worse.

We had a dog many years before we had kids. He didn't get forgotten once the kids arrived. We all viewed him as part of the family and the kids especially miss him now that he is gone.

To think of how many dogs we are breeding that solve systemic society issues...

Pit bulls and other guarding breeds in low-income areas to help people feel safe
Doodles and other companion breeds as children
So many dogs as coping mechanisms for undiagnosed mental health issues

What is the "right" reason to get a dog?

+1

Try it, OP. You might feel human.

Because you want to share your life with a dog because you think the species is really neat.

Cool. Didn’t know this. Time for another fur ball.

I don’t understand this, you have dogs and children to enrich your life and provide for theirs. That’s an emotional need. It’s not bad.

Having an unhealthy relationship with your dogs or children or abandoning them is completely different and is a problem.

Maybe millennia ago (we don’t really know) but treating dogs on par with human children is also a very old practice.

Some dogs were bred to be lap dogs for royalty. Love it.

I get it. People don't want to hear that "loving" their dogs is in any way harming them. It is easier to keep on using the dog.
