Lol this 100%. As said in another thread here - New Jersey kids cosplaying as Southern gentry.

Not sure about NW, but Duke is brutally intense academically.

lol. duke is about as far from "southern culture" as it gets.

+1 if by "southern culture" you mean woke liberal paradise. and it's not an oasis. the whole Triangle is NOT "deep south" feeling. At all.

agree with the poster who said Duke is intense academically

may be helpful to think of NU as a place for theatre/arts-interested types and Duke as a place for athletic-interested types. But really, both schools have both.
Do consider Duke has better weather.

They are both amazing choices. Congrats to your daughter and good luck deciding.

NU is a top ten school. Duke is dropping.

Sounds like Northwestern would be a better fit. Kudos to her for these great acceptances!

She has interests in theater, is in her high school choir, very friendly girl with a little bit of a shy side but I think she wants to break out of her shell a little bit in college. Didn't we all!

NU, all the way. The opportunities for performing arts (consuming them and participating in them) are phenomenal, and I think the climate is a softer place to land socially than Duke, at least from my experience at NU vs. those I know who went to Duke. I absolutely loved my years at NU. Good luck to your DD!

Talking about the trifecta of frat/sororities, social activities centered around alcohol, and the worship of college sports. That's pretty southern to me.

Whenever you hear the word "yikes" you know you're dealing with a woke bro.

Okay, so, your sophisticated analysis equates Duke with a big SEC school.

Yeah exact same thing going to Duke vs Ole Miss. Identical experiences.

How idiotic. I wouldn't even say attending UNC-CH is anything like that. No idea why people with no experience with a school feel the need to opine so definitively. All types of people in this world, I guess.

No one said it was sophisticated. To someone from Boston, it's quite similar. And I'm not an idiot. Not sure why you are upset about this comparison? Seems like this hit a nerve? Ouch. Lots of people in this world, sis. You need to chill.

And PS, several family members went to Duke, as well as friends. And my husband went to an SEC school. No idea why "people" who don't have a clue about someone's perspective are commenting. LOL.

Duke does have the advantage of having some very cutting edge research laboratories associated with campus and nearby. So if your DD is interested in biotech she may find some good opportunities there

Vanderbilt is southern culture.
