Is this OP or just a guess?

This is OP. It was not in a NoVA district, further south but won't say more than that. The forum is for VA Public Schools other than FCPS.

Yea, on the webpage DC Urban Moms and Dads- this is generally regarded as a NOVA board. This is not super shocking coming from the south- there are still a lot of confederate flags flying down there, even teachers- I grew up there and its one of many reasons I left.

There are parts of VA where religious education trailers are set up right next to public school campuses and kids spend part of their school day receiving religious indoctrination. It is in theory optional and “private,”, but kids who don’t go are subject to disapproval and bullying. It is in no way a surprise to me that some of these same school districts would fawn over REL.

Wow. That is so scary. No one we have so many dumb MAGAs running around. They are brainwashed early on.

It's easy to forget, but Lee wasn't universally scorned until relatively recently. The famous PBS Ken Burns documentary shows him in a positive light, for example. The R.E. Lee Memorial (in Arlington) is still run by the National Park Service, and it's still a memorial. I'm sure most textbooks and other learning materials are woefully out of date. That will all change.

Wow. That is disturbing.

I will say this. I had an APS 4th grader just 4 years ago and that paragraph is a decent summary of what she was taught. “He was a gentleman and a loyal Virginian. He didn’t REALLY want to joint the Confederacy but loved VA, etc.” That’s changed now for sure.

One of the reasons I won't live in certain places in this country.

I am an immigrant, not white, but was educated in the US, out west. Lee was never described this way where I was educated.

I know someone who grew up in rural NC, and this person was telling me all kinds of doozies they learned in school regarding "revisionist history".

Really? Where is this? I grew up in the southern half of VA and still have family scattered throughout that area, and I’ve never heard of this.

It’s VA. My MIL, a school counselor in rural SWVA, would conceal carry onto school property and leave a loaded weapon in her car. Jesus and guns. White Christian Americans in those parts drop the n-word like it’s no big thing and teach the War of Northern Aggression.

That's exactly what I was taught as a kid in DCPS.

Yes but how many other posts are about other VA schools outside NOVA? It would have been nice to clarify. It's not surprising to hear knowing the area. Some of those areas still teach abstinence edu instead of sex ed.

If you scan down this Facebook page several posts you can see photos of kids walking from their technically off campus (I hope) religious education building back to the school building during the day.

meh. I don't see this as all that surprising for a non-NOVA school in VA. I don't agree with it but it's not flooring if it's from a ROVA area.

At the time, Lee was a very well respected person in Virginia. Even after the war they didn't treat him like a traitor because they were trying to heal the country. Lee isn't responsible for every racist redneck in our country. I feel like the longer back in history the easier it is to wrap someone into controversy because of course today that doesn't fly.
