| So it seems pretty random. Some kids with average grades and regular ECs got in whereas others did a whole lot more. |
DC also did several years of science research with a mentor and the paper has been accepted and is on track to be published. Regardless if your DC is looking at an Ivy or other competitive institutions, a strong and sustained interest is science research seems to be desirable. I would like to compliment all the high school science research mentors out there. DC had to work very independently, which was challenging, but, in my DCs case, this was an unpaid job this professor took on just from a request by DC. They are unsung heros of out education system.and there is a dire need for more of them. |
That would be surprising news to all the kids admitted ED this year to Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, Penn and Columbia. |
I'm a professor that mentored an Asian-American student this year as part of her AP Research class. She got into an Ivy. Exceptional student and interesting research project. |
Thank you for being a mentor from the parents of students interested in research! My DC's mentor was impressive. DC learned a lot of lessons about science research but also but patience, perseverance through disappointment and frustration, and that hard work and persistence pay off in the end. It was such a valuable experience for DC. |
Sorry, I don’t count those as Ivies — I think Harvard, Princeton and Yale. I forget there are others! |
You are a very sad person! Kids of any race that do more than just get good grades and have good score exponentially increase their odds obtaining acceptance to a school in the Ivy Sports League. If you are so ignorant as to only count HPY then you really should not be looking at the whole league-- your attitude would block you from success at any of the schools HPY graduate |
Can not a poster of HYP caliber come up with a better insult than that? Please do better if you intend to represent your precious triumvirate. |
My DS is a rising freshman and will be doing Research Biology in 9th grade. Please do you have recommendations on how to go about finding a mentor for a research project and also how to pick a topic? I am not sure if the topic is already provided by teacher. |
+1. I'm the above poster with two kids admitted ED at Ivies. I have undergrad degree from HYP -- but preferred my kids go to another Ivy (which they both did). |
All, the old Pee-Wee Herman “I meant to do that!” Response. Either way you are an idiot. |
| Mine did and has acted like the world revolves around her since. I hope it stops- she was a nice kid before. |
How does a rising freshman get to do scientific research? |
Anyone can attempt a research project but try try try to find a mentor to have a strong educational and valuable experience. |
My guess is it has more to do with how she was raised. /who the hell shames their own kid on the internet? |
