Baby Slings- Warnings are about to be issued

Anonymous
I have an Infantino sling! It was given to me by my SIL, and the one time I tried to use it w/ my newborn, I could not figure it out and gave up. Thank goodness!

I also have a Moby, which I love and have used sooo much. My baby is 3 months now, and I could not live w/o the Moby. It was the only way to get him to fall asleep during months 1 & 2, and we still use it when we go on walks, or simple shopping trips. The Moby rocks. I just think it's a bit of a ripoff for $50 when all it is is 5 yards of fabric. Next time, I'll make my own.

I do have the sling pictured and could only use it for about 5 min at a time. I have a number of other slings/carriers that I use daily and love. I'll be throwing that particular sling away tonight. I'd been saving it to pass on to a friend that is pregnant but will gladly buy her an Ergo instead!

Hi -- babywearing teacher here.

It really is about that particular kind of sling -- we call it a "bag sling".

That type of sling is innately dangerous. It puts your baby into a dangerous position that you can not overcome by "correct" usage. See this link for a better explanation:
http://babyslingsafety.blogspot.com/

You want to choose a carrier that ensures your baby is "close enough to kiss" and keeps their chin well away from their chest and keeps them out of a c-position. You want to support their back and keep their airway open.

Ring slings, pouches, mei teis, soft structured carriers, wraps, all just fine. This recall is not about these carriers.

It is somewhat frustrating to see panic over slings in general as many of us in the babywearing community have been doing a lot of letter writing, etc, about this style of sling for literally years -- since before any deaths (at least those made public) were announced. They are dangerous by their very design and we have been out there stating as such for years now.

pp here -- wanted to clarify that while the recall (sorry, warning, I guess -- I WISH it were a full recall on that type at this time) is not about the types of carriers I listed, one does of course still have to use them safely. This is where safe usage comes in -- just like with car seats or any other baby equipment.

If you would like to review safe usage for carriers of this sort, please see here:

Actually, they're talking about all slings that put the baby in the C position. They only mention that brand as an example.

The Dr Sears one is an Over the Shoulder Baby Holder, right? If so, I kind of think it is a crappy sling, but it isn't a bag sling.

Babywearing instructor back one more time. Here's a good link discussing how to know if you have a safe carrier:
