This. Let's just name all the schools after their neighborhoods. |
The SB announced last night they were voting against westover village- b/c there was also a westover plantation and someone might perceive the name westover to be after the plantation. |
Ugh. Why is Arlington so dumb? |
They do realize that there is a Tuckahoe Plantation? |
That school might be next - didn't know that! |
Whole system should drop the Arlington name and just become The Public Schools |
It probably was named after the plantation. A lot places in Arlington were, including Arlington itself. I don’t think they will go change every school/street/neighborhood name, because it would just be too costly. But going forward, it’s probably a good idea that they avoid the naming convention that was meant to evoke the southern gentility of plantation living for whites and/or evoke the terror of slavery and Post-Reconstruction/Jim Crow for Black Americans. |
+1 This is what things are rapidly coming to - across the entire country. Wokeness run amok. |
I 100% support changing names like JEB Stuart, Stonewall Jackson, and Robert E Lee. those were all designed to promote the 'glory days' of the south, as part of jim crow etc. 2. I see benefits to stopping naming things after historic slaveowners etc- although view the name changes as kind of unnecessary. 3. But Westover???? Westover plantation is in Charles City VA, on the James River. There is zero historical evidence that Westover village in Arlington was named after the plantation. The name Westover was first used as in the 1930's in a new low income housing development Westover hills. There is simply no known (or even likely) connection between the developer picking the name westover hills and the plantation in virginia. This is ridiculous. ps- kind of indifferent to Westover vs Cardinal for the name of the school- but to refuse westover based on the plantation idea is indeed wokeness run amuk. |
