Typical schedule APS kindergarten

During that time the kids were supposed to sit and work quietly at their desks. This included a big chunk of "silent reading time" where kids were asked to sit and read to themselves. It was very hard for my young 5 yo.

Math was in the afternoon in a 30 minute block. Lunch and recess and specials were sandwiched in the middle of the day.

Good Lord. My 5yo rising kindergartner has ADHD and there's no way she could handle that.

I don't know what school the OP is from -- but this isn't typical. Most schools work up to fifteen minutes of independent reading, in first grade no less. Or maybe my kids were just in the underachieving classes -- who knows!

Kindergarten is required to have snack time every day (except perhaps this year where they’ve switched around lunch times to minimize maskless eating), so this account seems a little off.

FALSE. There is not snack time in every APS K. There was not at my children’s.

OP here, thanks so much for replies. Definitely worries me that there isn't more free play/outdoor time -- I went to early ES in Canada in the 80s and it was more laid back then and there I guess. It seems there is some difference based on schools in APS too. Appreciate input so I can start helping DS prepare.
