Adding a skylight to upstairs rowhome hallway - any downsides?

Anyone have any recommendations for a company that can install a solar tube?

When we replaced the roof on our Cap Hill RH, we learned that whoever installed the skylight over our stairs cut right through the main joist. We had to replace it ($$$$) to continue with the roof -- the roofer literally said we had no choice. There was nothing holding up the roof. Now there's a great big joist running through the middle of the space below the skylight.

Our next door neighbor's house was renovated by the same developer at the same time and has the same issue, I think. But it hasn't been fixed.
