In the UK, the schools have gone back fulltime, in person and even the lower school don't even wear masks. They had the virus much worse over there and here, my kids are in school but it's more like prison.

not blowing into wind instruments and singing is hardly random.

you just can't do these things in the middle of a pandemic with an airborne virus.

i mean duh what do people expect.

We expect you to do your research, be impressed at the creative ways that have found to make music safe, and feel like a moron for not googling first.

My older kid goes to Oberlin, where the Conservatory kids have been playing woodwinds and doing opera all year. They go 3-4 weeks at a time with 0 cases with surveillance testing.

Marching bands at all levels are competing, including VSHL this spring. And unlike VSHL, no outbreaks.

It’s been a year, they have scientifically tested PPE and mitigation methods for music.

1. You can play and sing masked

2. Your instrument can be masked

3. They are are valuable as athletics

4. If FCPS can do it safely, pretty much anyone can.

Schools just opened. No one cares if your kid has to play his trombone at home.

Music is more valuable than sports, anytime and anywhere. Sports are for those who can't do anything else. That said, school should not be focusing on either right now. Do those at home.

That’s funny. Athletes get paid more.

Totally agree that neither is a priority right now.

wow I wish I could post a link of the picture I saw of a band practicing with each child in a plastic bubble. Like the ones they sell for parents to sit in and watch a soccer game, for example. It was hysterical....especially the kid playing the tuba inside one.

I'll try to post it, but forgive me if it doesn't go through. I never get it right.

What if...and hear me out on this OP...what if not everyone's values hierarchy is EXACTLY the same as yours? I know it's a stretch. But while your kid may thrive due to his connection with sports or art, another person's kid may live for trumpet! Just because it is trivial to you does not mean that it is trivial to your neighbor. Empathy is a good thing to have and works best when you display it for others rather than demand it from others.

I mean some schools in other states have had in-person marching band and football games all. season. long. State competitions were held and everything without an explosion of covid. But go ahead and rant about how you need someone else's kid to not play their instrument just because.

Oh, but let's be sure that VA still has high school wrestling matches. As long as they're masked, right????

Can you read? We said sports also aren’t a priority.

You can't have everything in a friggin pandemic. Your kid can play his trumpet. Just not at school.

Other kids can't go to to school at all because they have a medical condition that puts them at high risk. Be glad your kid can at least get some in person school.

Well, my kid is playing the frigging trumpet at a MOVa public HS. So deal with it.

I guess it's funny, if one thinks money is the ultimate qualifier to value.

I agree with you OP. I saw that post on AEM and was really tempted to comment. Like who gives a sh**? The endless complaining from both sides is too much. But this specific poster went beyond the usual ridiculous posts I have seen.
