LOL NWSL has a champion every year and yes without USSF it's a failed league. USWNT is popular because they win, yes, but they win because the rest of the world doesn't care about women's sports (for the most part... especially soccer). It's slowly getting better. Sorta. |
I never said why USWNT win or anything about failed pro womens leagues. I'm just stating that the USWNT is why soccer is so popular with young girls. I happen to agree with you that having very little competition on a global scale is the main factor, despite that article saying it's all about internal competition. They play a very direct brand of soccer with superior athletes (not necessarily superior technical players). Winning is winning though and they do a lot of it. |
| let's replace all USWNT members with trans athletes and we'll stay #1 for sure |
Read the bold. Read the underlined. Read the bold. Read the underlined. Think about it. And yes, I agree with you overall. But that's also why athleticism is more important than technical ability in girls (and women's) soccer. |
| USWNT are winners because in the U.S., girls have access to a better standard of living than girls living in other parts of the world. The girls in the area definitely have a leg up in that department. |
Ha! Good one. |
Fewer slide tackles, few yellow cards/warnings, fewer contact injuries, few straight red cards, fewer headed goals, fewer fights. More players leave the game because their body fails them than because of a contact injury. |
What are you comparing against? This isn't a gender comparison. It should be a girl's sports comparison. |
| Alex Morgan played a big part in it for girls that are playing now. She glamorized it. |
Nobody is talking gender; talking boys and girls soccer which is based on the sex of the person. |
| Softball and basketball are seen as less feminine. |
softball isn't popular for the same reason baseball isn't played by athletic boys anymore- it's just boring |
| Soccer is fun whether you are skilled or not. |
That is part of it, but teams from Northern Europe have a high standard of living as well. They also have a deeper, longstanding relationship with the game. The fact is that in those countries they simply don't really care about women's soccer like we do. Men's soccer is so pervasive in Europe that it's like rolling our interest in American football, baseball, and basketball, and hockey into one sport. |
the US has title IX which ensures that womens sports are funded in college and high school. That alone gives the US a huge leg up. We're also pay to play at the youth level and parents treat sons and daughters equally- that ensures a league infrastructure for girls. In Europe, so much is sponsored by the local clubs and, for the most part, they really don't care about girls |
