ACPS planning virtual option for next year

I think they will make the rest of the hybrid experience this year miserable and try to bully families into choosing virtual.

I'm not sure that I agree. That may be ACPS's intent, but I think my son's teachers will do their best to make hybrid the best experience that it can be.

I mean the school board. I don’t think they are supporting or giving teachers their best. Teachers are just as frustrated. They are sometimes last to know information.

That's what I'm hearing from my child's teachers in ES. They are the very last to know information (right after parents).

The school board doesn't care. Not a single one answered "getting kids back in school" when asked about their priorities at their last retreat.

And it's painfully obvious what Hutchings and central office wants.

My DC is being informed on a daily basis by his AP teachers that going back to in person school is too dangerous and too hard. I can imagine it is very difficult to show up for a 6 hour work day when you’ve become accustomed to two 45 min zoom sessions per day.

Good. They should have an online option. What the teachers and teacher's unions fighting going back tooth and nail don't realize is that as soon as school districts figure out how to run these programs virtually, they no longer need to hire locally. Someone in the middle of Ohio could teach remotely and take their jobs. Good luck remote teachers.

I think they should offer a virtual option for people that want it through an outside provider, and have 5 days a week for the rest of the kids. My kid just turned 13, so there's a chance his age group can be vaccinated by the late fall. If that happens, there is no reason for his age group to remain virtual.

I 100% agree with all of this.

Well than reduce my taxes. Why should I pay Alexandria rates if someone from Ohio can deliver services? This is silly. Have we lost all perspective?

If it is just offered for a percentage of students choosing to stay virtual, why would they do that? You are aware that currently, teachers in Ohio, Florida etc. teach kids taking classes through Edgenuity (either kids too accelerated for classes offered at their elementary, or older kids who cannot attend school for reasons due to life circumstances or behavioral disabilities).

With some kids in hybrid now, what have people heard? How is it going? How are the classroom monitors?

I still haven't decided if I'm sending my son or not.

I'm interested as well. Still nervous about the possibility of hybrid K in the fall.

If you can, I’d look into some of the preschools that have added a kindergarten class or expanded. Fairlington Preschool just announced they’re adding a kinder class. ACPS is far behind other school districts in terms of reopening plans (one of the few districts in our area not putting hepa filters in classrooms, no COVID dashboard for transparency, not allowing open windows for circulation and few options for outside lunches). Several schools have already announced positive COVID tests among those in the buildings, but not much information being shared with families. It’s been an utter failure at every turn this year. Really depressing.

Don't send your kid to ACPS. It's a complete mess in normal times & is in a death spiral. Look into alternatives.

Any details on which schools have announced positive tests? I haven't heard this.

We’re at Charles Barrett and got an alert about a positive test from someone who was in the building last week. MVCS got a notice this week. I feel like I heard about one other school but now can’t remember which one.

The variants are becoming more widespread. This is going to increase. You will become inured.

ACPS is already playing up the variants and downplaying the recent advice (based on CDC recommendation and science) to reduce distancing from 6 ft to 3 ft.

Guess you saw the new video, too.

PP. At this point I'm just planning to homeschool if things aren't fully back to normal.
