NoVa - car oil change with own oil

He is just being a show off. Our cars and family cars have run just great for years and years with shop oil changes.

I have a aftermarket modified high performance engine in my car (Dodge Challenger Hellcat) that requires a synthetic oil with very specific friction inhibitor additives to deal with higher shear forces and high compressor rpm within the supercharger unit. The local Jiffy Lube or other oil change place isn’t going to have the oil I use on hand. They would have to order it, and mark it up accordingly. But I can get it delivered to my house for less than they’d pay for it. So instead of paying $29/quart for 6 quarts, I only pay $11/quart for 6 quarts. Same goes for the filter. So I save about $80 for every oil change, which is required every 2,000 miles on my car, instead of every 6,000 on most cars. So it works out to being a couple hundred cheaper over the same interval as a “normal” car if I had the oil change place order it. Honesty, I’d change it myself, but I’m lazy. Clearly you don’t like me. And I’m good with that. But I know more about cars by myself than any 4 other people you know put together.

i am the "dp" not the pp you were responding to. sounds like you have a very special engine/situation and going thru extensive care for your engine. do you feel comfortable mechanics at your local shop (wherever you take it in) get the job done correctly? if i were in your situ, i'd do it myself (i.e., not sure if i'd trust anyone else to do it). i doubt OP has engine like yours though

An oil change is pretty simple. I trust them for that at jiffy lube. Unscrew the drain nut, drain the old oil, replace the nut. Unscrew filter canister, replace filter element, screw canister back together. They put the empty oil bottles back in the box, so I know the oil went in (I check anyway later) and check the drain nut.

But for anything else, I use the shop that initially did the work on the car when I bought it. I don’t have a manufacturer warranty since the car has been modified, so I don’t bother going to the dealer for anything. If you have a high performance/exotic car, I recommend this place. It’s up near MoCo air park. I’d post the name but it’ll probably get deleted. They’re not hard to find on a web search though.

If you're picky about what oil to use, you'd always do this, I always bring my own oil.
