APS - Imagine a world without masks and 5 days in school — how will it be?

OP here, yes I would be too. I'm skeptical we will have anything but remedial learning for 2021-2022 though, and "smart" kids will be busy doing Khan Academy and worksheets while teacher works with the rest of the class to make up for the DL debacle.

Imagine if people would just stay home and allow the virus to die. It will look the same in past years. Some kids ahead, some on target, and some struggling.

NP, we are also curious though, we will hear from private schools soon and have to commit for next year, unsure what our public alternative really will be?? should we take a private, and thus commit to maybe several years of $$$ tuition (because 1 yr is dumb and disruptive)?? What grade? How dire of a choice is this?

5th grade. We can afford the tuition fine, just means reduce our liquid long term savings (HHI of $400k, so we are fine but not DCUM rich), but no hardship to go private up through middle school. we would revaluate at high school to see if public is right option or continue with private.

Private without a second thought. APS middle school is mediocre in normal times. It's going to be a hot mess remediating all of this.

Most of us can’t afford private and anyone debating this is sort of out of touch with the larger community. And then for folks that can almost but not quite afford it it makes them feel like they’re doing something wrong. And the truth is it was really irresponsible for kids to be in private school this year. We may not like every aspect of what’s going on in the public school right now but they really were trying to do what was best for the kids. Like not die at school.

Sounds like that was on your radar pre-Covid. So why don’t you decide from that place.

This. I read (WaPo I think) that we're heading into a fourth round and Virginia is leading the charge. Our Governor is a doctor and we're in the Top 15 for most cases. What is wrong with this picture?

Masks will be with us for a while. Even when 70-80% of the population is vaccinated it seems probable that we will still be wearing masks. I don't "get" the resistance. If people would just wear the darn masks and do the basics with social distancing we would all be much better off.

Irresponsible how? Private schools are not seeing huge spread. It's been going well. In many ways, they are trailblazing for the public schools.

We’re also 12th in total population sooooooo one would reasonably expect us to be around 12th in total number of cases .......

Yup, also... I'm not seeing the nascent 4th wave on the cases by reporting date or the cases by day or first symptom graph. Where is this idea coming from that VA is leading the way to a 4th wave?

APS middle school this year has been basic at best. I have a 6th grader at WMS. I have applied to private next year. I can’t imagine another year of this misery where there is no rigor and teachers really don’t care.
