Wilson in the fall. Any thoughts/ideas/concerns about what model it will be?

FWIW, Moderna is already approved for ages 16+. So all teachers, seniors, and (almost) all juniors could almost certainly be vaccinated by fall, even without further authorizations. Assuming the supply is what is now projected, the majority of adults in DC should be vaccinated too and I imagine community spread will be very low (maybe even close to herd immunity). There will be enormous pressure for students to at least have the option of being in person.

You're right- my mistake. But the point is the same--currently authorized vaccines could cover all teachers and staff and (almost) half of students at Wilson. And there should be adequate supply/distribution to actually vaccinate all of them. I'm hoping that DCPS will require vaccines of those who are able to get them, considering they require all other vaccines (including the HPV vaccine, which some people are opposed to on moral grounds).

Are you kidding? We have teachers refusing to get them. You cannot force them.
We have some teachers vaccinated and they don’t want to return to the classroom.

I don't think they will have that kind of leverage. Pressure will be enormous after a year of DL and they will have very little to stand on. When they negotiated last year, there was too little known about the virus, the degree to which it can be transmitted in schools, and there were no vaccines. All this has changed.

There has been a ton of variation across public schools in how they have handled this and though I would LOVE for my Wilson student to be in person now, overall I have been very impressed by the way Wilson has handled DL. My child has had synchronous instruction pretty much from 9:30-4pm 4 days/week and enough homework to cover Wednesdays. This is WAY more than my middle schooler and more than many MoCo public schools (and even some private schools), from what I hear from friends. I think Wilson pivoted to the 4x4 schedule so that they would be able to accommodate more synchronous instruction, which was both "complex" and "creative." I give them a lot of credit (and have every expectation that they will work hard to get all the kids in person in the fall).

And eye roll at the Wilson is doing better than MCPS and privates - like you have any real idea about that.

And yet...you haven’t demonstrated in any way that Wilson is doing a poor job, especially compared to other public high schools in the area. I’m a new poster, and I agree with the PPs’ assessment: Wilson has done about as good a job as I could have hoped with virtual learning. They have done the best they can given the public health constraints with IPL. I have attended multiple parent meetings with administrators and witnessed the care and attention they’re bringing to the process. It’s not perfect. It’s not ideal. But it’s pretty good. So I’m hopeful for the fall.

I find it amazing when people start a comment by calling something BS and then unload a pile of it themselves. (1) I don't know what you mean by "comprehensive" high school, but it is certainly not the case that all DC high schools are 4x4 (Walls, for example, is not) and I'd love to know your source at "Central" for getting everyone on the same schedule; (2) my comparison between Wilson and the experience of my middle schooler was clearly about the amount of synchronous instruction (not just homework); and (3) re: your eye rolling, I have two relatives teaching in local private schools and several friends with high schoolers in MoCo....but more importantly, I give zero f**ks if you think I have any idea what I'm talking about.

As Wilson parents, we are very happy with DL, with communication from school and most of the teachers. I see in real time admin make deft efforts to help a couple teachers who may have a hard time with DL, in response to parent concerns.

Last semester, my DC had to do an assignment to imagine a school reopening under specific public health restrictions. So when I read about Wilson’s plan, I could really appreciate the thought they put into it.

I imagine everything is bigger, brighter and better at Sidwell. Or maybe Someplace Else. But honestly, sometimes I overhear my student’s Team classes, and I think to myself, “I wouldn’t want DC anywhere else.”

I have a kid at a top private (Sidwell/NCS/STA/GDS) and one at Deal, headed to Wilson.
I can tell you that this year has not been handled well at either school. There is no way (ZERO) that it's been worth it to pay for the private. People ask me almost daily about how the private school has handled things and honestly it hasn't been great.
We're optimistic for Wilson in whatever form it operates next year (going in with our eyes wide open, having been in DCPS for a decade) and our child is excited.

Nobody said Wilson did a great job bringing kids back. A lot of folks (with kids at Wilson and either with kids at other schools or good information from other schools) have been reasonably satisfied with the distance learning that Wilson has put in place this year.
