There is nothing fussy about Garamond. Sounds like you are the fussy one.

Only on DCUM. "I know you are but what am I?" from Garamond users.

Times New Roman is the IBM of typefaces: no one’s ever been rejected for using Times New Roman in their resume. I’ve known some people who didn’t like the font, but no one who would reject a candidate over it.

(But IBM’s corporate font isn’t TNR: https://www.ibm.com/design/language/typography/typeface)

Your spacing and content is more important than your font. Serif is more conservative, sans is more progressive. I personally don't like Times New Roman because it feels stuffy and old, but I wouldn't ding anyone for either if the resume is easy to read and has all the relevant info I want.

NP. Garamond is more commonly used for book typeface. It is elegant and has high readability.
