Explain the take out appeal

Anonymous
We always did more take out than going out, so our favorite places are those that are more geared towards take out. Think small restaurants with limited seating. We also do not drive far, if it’s not local we do not eat there. We never do delivery. Your food sits in their car forever.

I get that people are sick of cooking. But still. My takeout experiences, except for pizza and Chinese, have been disappointing at best.

By the time I call, wait on hold, drive, wait for pickup turn, get home- more than enough has elapsed to cook something myself. And by the time I go to eat the takeout, it is lukewarm and soggy. Is anyone really loving their takeout experience? Share what you do and where you like to order

I hate it. But I feel strongly about supporting our local restaurants. And it gives me a nice, once-a-week break from cooking. We've been taking turns picking the place and the kids are into it.

Me too. I like supporting the restaurants. But I can cook many things better and healthier, if, and this is key, I want to devote the time to doing so.

Live in a city and then walk to the takeout place? You get exercise and it's faster.

I don't own or know how to use, e.g., Indian spices or Korean sauces, and I live in an apartment so can't exactly BBQ at home. Also, it's a lot of work to cook for a mixed vegetarian/carnivore family!

Are you really this dim, OP? If millions of people are fine with getting takeout and you’re the lone dissenter then the problem is you.

OP, why are you calling and waiting on hold?

I go online, put in my pick up time, then my order, and call it a day. We, luckily, have not had a terrible take out experience. I want our local restaurants to survive. how do you think this will happen without carry out OP?

It is food that I don't have to cook, and that tastes different than what I cook at home. In a pandemic, that's all I need.

I get takeout for things I know I can’t do better myself. Which now after 11 months of cooking everyday, is stuff like Ethiopian food or really high end foods.

I want my favorite restaurants to still be open when we’re able to dine in safely.

My food is always hot when I get home. But the fact that you are calling and driving (rather than submitting your order online and then popping around the corner to pick it up) tells me you live in some sprawling suburb with crap options. Those of us who live in walkable neighborhoods filled with all types of cuisines quite enjoy our takeout. We're not limited to fast food / fast casual, but get meals from actual restaurants that in non-pandemic times would be a lovely dining experience. Also delivery services vastly opens up dinner options without having to leave the comfort of my couch.

Does the stick up your ass hinder your digestion?

+1.

— District resident, not in a sprawling zip code

Fwiw, I’ve noted that my two friends who get $$ delivery 6-7 nights a week are depressed and so are their teens. Anecdotal obviously. They just order delivery of everything all. day. long. Starbucks, trash bags, sushi, tacos, mascara, apples ....

OP, I don’t understand why you’d ever be eating lukewarm, soggy food. It sounds like it takes you longer than average to get your food home, but why can’t you reheat it? Do you have an oven, toaster oven, or microwave? One or the other of these gadgets can make your food nice and warm, and a pan on the stovetop will suffice as well.

Take out does not appeal to me unless we are desperate and in that case it's CFA.. We go out to eat a few days a week. I like my food hot and fresh.

And then it's freezing when you get it home.
