What type of fishing- fly fishing vs conventional, fresh water vs salt, bass vs trout, flats vs blue water, meat harvesting vs catch & release?
These guys can hook you up with some great options depending on what you are looking for. https://www.yellowdogflyfishing.com/ |
I'd also like to surprise my husband

As an avid fisherman (fly and all other types), I would say this:
1. As for family friendly, if you are talking about taking kids fishing, I do not think fly fishing is the way to go. It requires quiet and patience (and that is, indeed, one of the really special things about it). Boat fishing is better for more of a party atmosphere But again, depends on the age of the children. I would recommend Chesapeake bay fishing for stripers and such (depending on when you go). And I would cap it at half a day, at most, unless your kids are really patient. 2. If you are talking about just having a family vacation where your husband can get away to fish, fly fishing is back in the mix. Western MD has some great flyfishing and some lodges nearby. Up in the Poconos could work. The Rapidan River in Central VA is also quite nice. But here is the thing: if your husband is not an expert, it is so worth it to pay for a guided trip. The guide will not only find the fish, but will help tie the flies on the rod, give tips, bring lunch, etc. Well worth it. Even better if there are friends who like fishing and could come along. 3. If your husband wants to do boat fishing on his own while you and other family members do vacation stuff, there are plenty of options around the Chesapeake. Find a nice town with an airbnb or lodge and hang out with the fam while he goes out fishing for a day, and again, all the better if he has friends who want to come along. I guess I don't think family fishing trips are great unless and until the kids are old enough and are interested enough. Otherwise, you are managing squirrely kids with long poles with sharp hooks on the end, and the parents are doing more policing and not much fishing. |

Recommend you contact Tilgjman Helmsley at “ Breezin’ Thru” charters at (410) 490-1370 for the best Rockfishing experience on the Chesapeake Bay.
Captain Tilghman is an entertainer as much as a “catcher man”, he’s on the fish and makes every charter unique. Never had a bad trip with him. |
