killer commute to excellent school v. easy commute to very good school

Last year we passed on the perfect school for DS's learning style, because of the awful commute potential. Instead we committed to our 2nd choice school -- which is very, very close but nowhere near as special a school as First Choice.

I'm not at all sure we did the right thing, because DS is unhappy in ways that would've definitely been addressed better by Far Away School. Of that I'm sure. While I do love the 4.5 minute commute (!), every time he bitches about what's wrong with Close School and says he doesn't want to go, I wonder if we're short-changing him.
