If it was startlingly ugly, it's an opossum. My husband (also foreign) almost crashed the car the first time he saw one in the road.

My in-laws have a possum that has taken up residence in their back yards. Their dog (a neurotic cocker spaniel) and the possum are sworn enemies and have had epic battles.
