Have you ever been in a physical fight?

I beat up a would-be mugger a few years ago. What set me off was not only that he was trying to rob me, but that he called me a bitch for no reason. As in "gimme yo money, bitch". I kneed him in the groin, then punched him in the face as he folded. Then I got scared that he was armed, so I kicked him in the gut to make sure he didn't get up before the cops could get there. When they were putting him in the car, he was yelling that I was a crazy-ass bitch, and they should be arresting me, not him. The cops laughed at him, said he got what he deserved. They told me it was dumb to fight and that I was lucky, took a report, asked me about 15 times if I was ok and if they should call someone, and they left. I thought I'd have to testify against him, which scared me, but I never heard about it again. I guess he pled guilty? I don't know if I would fight back, if I were in the same situation again. It didn't feel as good or empowering as one might imagine. I was mostly scared, and my hand really hurt, and I was surprisingly horrified (I'm not squeamish, I watch lots of action movies) by the blood from his mouth. Oh, and my blouse ripped under the arm.

I'm sorry about your blouse. That sucks.

I don't think there's a wrong way to handle this kind of situation. You survived. That means you did the right thing.

I was attacked by a random crazy woman while walking to the metro. She came running up to me yelling, "you bitch, you bitch." I wasn't paying attention because I didn't know her until she started punching me in the face. In response, I hit her repeatedly with my cell phone (I had a chunkier one that came free with a 2-year contract). I could have punched with my keys as they were in my other hand but I figured that she was mentally disturbed and I didn't need to blind her. She fell down and I ran away.

A month later, it happened again with the same crazy woman. This time I just punched her hard and ran. I don't know what is about me that attracts crack whores.

Luckily for me, she didn't have much a punch.

lots of fights as a teen, but that leveled off in college. I woould fight over dumb things and I now have a lifetime ban from Meijer in Jackson, MI due to a fight. I'm a pacifist now, but that could be because I'm older and much more likely to get my butt kicked.

I've never been actually engaged in a physical fight - I've often been the "smoother over" in such situations - i.e. the person that talks everyone down from violence. I've also (a couple times) grabbed a guy to keep him from throwing down. I'm pretty strong for a chick, so it's been effective, if stupid. And I've gotten inadvertently shoved a few times in bars when fists started flying. Not fun.

I would probably resort to physical violence only if someone attacked me first and my safety or survival - or my daughter's - depended on it. I'm too paranoid about being sued to resort to violence otherwise. (i.e. if someone hit me and it wasn't a real threat, I probably wouldn't hit them back because a person who would do that could also be the type of douchebag who'd sue me for hitting them back.) If an adult hurt my daughter, I can't honestly say I wouldn't kill them, or try to. I have very fierce momma bear instincts.
