Will Montgomery County ever elect a Republican?

Anonymous
No after today no Ruplican gets a vote ever again. I don't care what they stand for or what level of government.

The Republican party lies over and over again to taxpayers. The party of "fiscal responsibility' Don the con stole millions in office and they want him back. Oh No. And Hawley lying coward who has his wife sue because he won't go under oath and perjure himself but it's ok for her?

Hogan - I liked him but he messed up the vaccine rollout

Never ever again at any level of government.

GOP is no longer a party of Democracy.

No, I am not naive enough to think Dems don't lie. But today the GOP made it's bed.

Before Trump, maybe. I would have voted for a republican.

Now, never again will I vote for any republican (or other conservative) for any office.

So, no.

Folks do need to wake up if they want any real changes. And I say this as a moderate Democrat. You all are about to lose your police department and I just wonder if anyone is even paying attention.

Oh good grief. No, we are not about to lose our police department, whatever that would even mean.

Yeah, you are. They are getting it from both sides -- public and politicians. All the good ones are leaving. You'll be left with the likes of Baltimore.

Oh, you mean that police officers currently employed by the Montgomery County Police are going elsewhere for employment.

Well, if they're leaving because they are unwilling to serve and protect everyone in the public equally, I don't think it's necessarily a net loss.

Nah, these guys love their good MoCo paycheck that they can take back to more rural parts of MD and PA. The police union huffs & puffs, but where else are these guys gonna work with such a robust tax base?

All talk. They have to deal with independent oversight moving forward. Waaaah, too bad.

Scaring white people with lies about minorities is so 1980s Reagan.

That time is over. The sun is setting on the Atwater GOP playbook.

Actually, the MoCo police department is one of the lowest paid in the region. There used to be hundreds of applicants for the academy each year, but now they are struggling to even fill seats. MoCo is currently an undesirable department because of the working conditions, primarily a very hostile council that doesn’t respect the officers or their contract. It’s easy for us to look in from the outside and criticize, isn’t it?

"Us" who? The public, who (a) interacts with the police, and (b) is who the police are supposed to serve and protect?

^^^if members of the police don't want to be yelled at for bigotry and under/over-policing, then they should work on eliminating bigotry from their ranks ("one bad apple spoils the whole barrel") and shifting their policing emphases.

How do you know they're not?

I am not a LEO, but I know many. They are good people, the type you would want in this profession. How do I know? Because I have been on ride-alongs. Because I have worked side-by-side with officers on service projects. (Yes, the police regularly do service projects.) The council has painted MCPD as monsters. It simply isn't true. The vast, vast majority of police interactions in MoCo require no use-of-force, in which the police are actually assisting the public. If you want more information, then I suggest you call and ask for a ride-along. You can also enroll in their citizen's academy. They are actually quite willing to positively engage with the community.

Surely some of them are. But it's not enough. How do I know that it's not enough? Because I see the results.

It's not good enough to say that most of the interactions in Montgomery County are unproblematic. Even if there's proper police conduct in 99% of interactions, that doesn't excuse police misconduct in the other 1%.

You are correct. On this, we agree. But do you have proof the other 99% aren’t angry about it, too? And is it fair to vilify the 99%?

Well, first of all, I was talking about 99% of interactions, not 99% of police officers.

And second, if it actually were 99% of police officers working on eliminating 1% of police officers who are bigots, they'd be successful at it, wouldn't they? Or, if not, why wouldn't they be?

I certainly understand that there are good police officers who feel unappreciated and unfairly vilified. However, I think it's unrealistic to go into any public-service profession expecting people to appreciate you. Plus, again, the problem isn't the people who are saying that there are problems in the police. The problem is the problems in the police.

Moderate Republicans should register as Democrats and elect a moderate Democrat if they want to see change. Being an Independent or a Republican in MoCo is throwing away your vote. If you look at the data from MoCo primaries many of the politicians that MoCo residents are unhappy with are winning because of low voter turnout in primaries.
Anonymous
Well, what we get is someone like Robin Ficker and are you surpised that no one votes for Republicans. You get good moderate candidates and people will vote for you.

MoCo is also pretty well educated and diverse. What works in the Trump country will not work here. Stop with the misinformation and stupidity.
