You don’t have to spend $30K to get a non-“junker” car. You can buy a brand new Accord or Civic for under $25K (no one pays MSRP). It’s fine if OP wants something nicer, but let’s not pretend that the only options are a luxury vehicle or a Geo Metro with different colored doors.

Someone’s buying you a new car as a gift at 18 and you’re going to be bitchy that they picked it out? Jesus, the spoiled brats on this place kill me sometimes. |
Can’t want? Mind your own business. |
| My high school senior is 18 and 6'2. He drives a Jeep Wrangler and loves it. |
| Ford 250 |
You cannot buy a new Jeep Wrangler for $30K except a sport and that's not any better than a basic SUV. |
| The topic doesn't say anything about a vehicle. When I clicked I was going to suggest buying him a ladder and some professional grade painting tools, so he could have a trade. Height is useful if you're house painter. |

Subarus have the same safety tech and insurance is even cheaper because the cars are 30-50% cheaper than Volvos. I was shocked at how much my insurance went down when I bought a new Subaru. You’re so much less likely to get in a crash |
| agree on the previous recs for a subaru. my 6'3" husband fits well in the forester and also in the Hyundai Santa Fe or Tuscan. He also fits in the Ford Escape and Explorer |
It’s posted in the Cars and Transportation forum - so the intent of the inquiry is pretty clear. |
By contract, my very long-legged 6'3" husband was very uncomfortable in the Forester (like sitting in a chair strapped to a platform) and only moderately more comfortable in the Crosstrek (lower, more reclined seating). I had planned to get one last year and had to change my plans because we test drove several and he just couldn't get situated comfortably. I also found Subarus have terrible pickup. My 2004 Civic had more get-up-and-go on merges than any of the brand new Subarus I test drove. I wanted so badly to love them, but they were very disappointing. |
Only if it’s already modified to roll coal |
For safety and handling, it’s far worse |
| An 18 year old doesn't need a $30,000 car. That's ridiculous. And we're rich and could easily afford it. |
