And honestly people rarely want the favors anyway.

This. I don't give favors to people who didn't attend the party, but if someone dropped off a gift for my kid and I had an extra favor, sure.

Nope, in general.

I think it is appropriate to give a gift to a party you were invited to but did not attend but favors from the actual party itself don't need to be sent in return if it was mailed.

If I had an extra favor when they dropped off the gift, then sure.
