Daycare says can't use nickname?

What? No. This is BS and I’d pull and find another day care. If they can’t get his name right, what else can’t they get right. And not being able to explain their “policy” in a clear way? Also a concern.

I asked the teacher to please call him Jack, and today the director told us they cannot do that due to some confusing explanation of supposed OSSE regulations/what if there's an emergency and the paperwork says John but the teachers call him Jack/if there is a sub (s)he will be confused? This seems crazy to us -- it's his name and we'd like them to use our preferred one -- and the explanations didn't make a ton of sense; not to mention I'm a bit concerned that a sub is coming in and not even being told the kids' names? Before we make a major stink about this, though, wanted to see if others had heard anything like this. Thanks!

Ask them to show you the regulation that states no nicknames.

I heard of this happening before in a kindergarten class for a girl officially named katherine. The parents were upset about it (I get it) and went as far to officially change the girl's name.

I have directed two childcare centers in DC. We can FOR SURE call children by their nicknames! We specifically ask on their registration forms what their nickname is and what name you want on their cubby. On the attendance sheet, I use John (Jack) Jones because I want a teacher to know the child's full legal name is they need to find their file, etc. But everyday? We call them Jack.

And I've worked with 4 or 5 different licensors through the years.. they NEVER check or correct or have an issue with nicknames!

I'm constantly trying to keep Christopher from being Chris. I didn't name him that, and I don't like it. (Neither does he, but he's not going to correct teachers--yet)

Exact same name. School teaches him both, but only calls him Jack. Mainly because he doesn't answer to John.

Another mother of a John who goes by Jack. In our case the nickname is important because he’s named after another living John in the family and it would be confusing to have them
both go by John. No school has ever had an issue with it. Refer them to President Kennedy for Pete’s sake. He went by Jack too.
