In concurrent model, monitors are not actually teaching. In ES, they are warm bodies in the classroom because you can't leave ES aged kids unsupervised. They make sure kids just don't leave the classroom in the middle of a class, make sure kids are distanced, or they could assist with tech problems issues. The actual teaching is done by the licensed TEACHER with the ADA accommodation, teaching from home. |
What is the monitor meant to do if a child misbehaves? We had a child in our class last year (4th grade) that used to occasionally have crazy meltdowns where she would throw computers and try to stab other children with her pencil. It took three trained adults - one to evacuate the classroom and two to try to corral her. What will a low paid, untrained monitor do while the trained teacher is virtual? What will happen when the camera is off? We had a classroom "helper" last year in the same 4th grade class to help with another child that was autistic. He would often "help" the girls more than the boys. My daughter finally told me she was very uncomfortable with this man putting his arm around her while he helped her. After I told the teacher, he stopped putting his arm around her but I can't speak for the other girls in her class. And that was when the teacher was in the room. |
For all of you that don't like the idea of classroom monitors, no one is making you send your kids to school. If you fear for their safety, and your classroom is assigned a monitor, keep your kid at home. That is the most wonderful thing about free choice. |
ADA accommodations are for the rest of the school year and will not change. Vaccine status is irrelevant. |
If the choice is keeping your elementary school child at home alone while you work all day or sending your child in to a classroom that may not be safe, what do you choose and why? |
Well a lot of people don't assume that someone is bad without zero evidence, so I'd probably send my kid to school. |
This might even be record speed for DCUM. Classroom monitors went from warm bodies to child predators, in under two pages. You guys really outdid yourself this time! |
Indeed. They will go through the same background check as any staff. The positions are temporary/no benefits. Their term expires at the end of the school year. |
Back in fall they were saying literally anyone could watch or teach their kids as long as they were in the building. FCPS: we have hired a battalion of people to watch your kids so they can be in the buildings Parents: abuse. Predators. unsafe. |
They are no different than subs except for the temporary aspect. Subs don’t teach your kids either. They’re monitors. They have background checks to do the job too. |
The real problem is we are now paying two people to do one person’s job. Your tax dollars at work!
Imagine if I told my boss we needed to hire a second person in order for me to perform the job I used to do by myself! I wonder how that conversation would go. The double standard is appalling. |
Very true! And this is because parents want in-person instruction. This is the result. |
I agree. That’s why I chose virtual. |
Wait! DCUM has spent months arguing that all the teachers should be fired because it would be better and cheaper to hire unemployed people. Now that the unemployed people are coming, you don’t want them?!? |
No. It’s because priority vaccinated teachers STILL refuse to do their jobs. |
