Why are cats allowed to roam neighborhoods but dogs aren't?

Anonymous
Because some of us don't want to live in a post-Soviet republic with packs of stray dogs milling about trash heaps on the side of the road?!

I have a lot of stray cats in my neighborhood. When they hear me they run off. When dogs are on leashes many still try to jump on over.

I'm a dog lover and prefer them to cats, but it makes sense that cats can wander outside and dogs can't.

DCUM would like to outlaw bird feeders.

My cat is about this size. He’s afraid of outside but he’s the best cuddler ever.

How is that so different than people having "outdoor" cats where they are outside all day unleashed or supervised?

If it's because dogs bite....well cats scratch. And ours is so little, he's smaller than a regular cat.

Arent you worried that your dog might get hurt? Or taken yo the shelter by the county? I have cats and a dog. Cats are indoor only and dog walks on leash.

I don't think people want them outlawed, just for them to be acknowledged as setting up a pretty risky situation for birds.

If you want to put birds at risk by using a feeder, that's your business. But it doesn't mean you are not setting them up for harm.

no, I'm totally fine with packs of dogs forming. I can't possibly see how that would end badly

This poster wins for top-notch imagery.

Domestic animals must be kept under control. Cats were not historically domestic animals: they lived near us but they weren't "for" anything, weren't trained, weren't bred, etc. That's why the exception.

Yes now we have Cat Fancy and purebred cats and that Jaxon Galaxy guy on YouTube ... But culturally we are not all in agreement that they're domesticated. Our laws and practices haven't caught up yet. They are starting to, which is why there's a push to keep cats indoors.

Anyway, leash your darn dog.

But what about the feral pigs moving toward our area? We might need roaming packs of dogs for protection.

Cats should be out either. They kill birds. But cats also dont carry rabies as often and dont transmit to other cats or humans. https://www.alleycat.org/cats-are-no-rabies-threat/

We treat our cat lijj my e a small dog in this respect. We let him go out in our backyard under supervision, but otherwise he stays in with us. I’d definitely worry about him wandering the neighborhood on his own. I once saw a possum in our backyard that was probably 30 pounds. It’s really not safe to let your cats roam free in the city.

Citation, please? Because that is not what I am seeing.

If you mean Montgomery County (and someone has been posting erroneously about that this morning, already), cats ARE allowed to roam "at large." If they go onto private property, they can be humanely trapped and returned to the owner or humanely transported to an animal shelter.

Holy crap this legislation is funny when you are coming at it cold:

906.2 No person shall drive or conduct swine, beeves, or other cattle between the
hours of 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.

903.8 Lofts, aviaries, nests, and other places where pigeons are kept shall be open
at all reasonable times to inspectors of the Department of Human Services.

902.8 No fowl shall be kept or permitted to run, fly, or stray within fifty feet (50 ft.)
of any building used for human habitation, or onto property other than the enclosure
designated in the application for permit; except where a permit has been approved
by the Mayor and issued under § 902.9.

Dp. My sister got an infection and also needed stitches after her cat went psycho and scratched her.

Because cats deliberately avoid people. Dogs often/usually deliberately go up to people. I don't know how you can be this stupid, OP. I mean that sincerely.
