Amen!

Thanks Thomson parents on this thread. Very helpful to get first-hand impressions. Sometimes hard to do in DC when neighborhood kids go to all different types of schools. Eager to hear how IB goes.

Don't discount the pre-S year -- headstart classes have reserved spots for non-low income kids. Maybe 10%? Something like that. A friend of mine got her kid into a headstart classroom and she's middle class. Call the school or just toss your hat into the ring.

I'm very grateful for this thread. Thomson wasn't even on my radar screen, and now I think we'll be applying (we're in Petworth, but thanks to the #63 bus getting there would be dead easy--actually easier than many closer schools).

Due to popular demand, Thomson is having a "last minute" Open House on Friday, at 9 am.

This will be a quick tour and chance to look at a couple of classrooms.

RSVP at thomsontigers@yahoo.com and please mention what grade you are interested in for the 2010-11 school year. This will allow us to plan classroom visits accordingly.

Thanks!

Maybe she went away b/c DCUM is so hostile to school that aren't JKLM or Cap City/Haynes/Yu Ying. I hope she comes back though.

Thanks for posting this observation! I thought I was the only one who noticed this!! Until I did some research on my own, I actually got suckered in to believing that JKLM and Oyster were the only good schools in DC and was getting quite depressed about it. I'm very glad I did my own homework. I just finished the pre-k lottery for DCPS and put a few Capitol Hill schools (which I NEVER see anyone talking about), Ross and Thomson. We'll also apply to Two Rivers, Yu-Ying, Capital City and maybe Stokes for the Spanish-language immersion program. I would do LAMB, but it's too far.

Sorry, I keep seeing "JKLM". What does that mean?

an abbreviation for certain west-of-the park (mostly Ward 3, 1 Ward 4) elementary schools. I think it's Janney, Key, Lafayette, Mann/Murch.

Does any current Thomson parent know how open Thomson's culture is, especially in regard to non-traditional families? We're a 2 mom-family and our daughter is a different race from us. Like a few others, this school wasn't even on our radar until a couple of days ago so we haven't had time to investigate it. We'll try to make it to Friday's open house, but any insight would be appreciated!

Thomson's former PTA president was part of a 2 mom family. All families and their children are welcome at Thomson.

My friend's daughter attended K at Thomson last year. She seemed happy with the school in general, but disappointed in the Kindergarten teacher - not at all warm or personable. I'm not sure how many teachers they have in K and all schools seem to have some duds. I've heard mixed opinions on the prinicipal - she seems really involved and plays guitar (pretty cool). I attended a carnival there last spring and liked the facilities - everyone was friendly, it was very diverse and the turnout was high.
