Celsius doesn't work in some calculations because it doesn't have a zero. 0C doesn't mean no temperature. It's just as arbitrary as F. Kelvin makes sense. |
Metric is used in medicine and science in the US. It's just everyday measures that we use the imperial system.
It makes sense in terms of ease of use. A foot is 12 inches. You can divide that evenly by 6,4,3, and 2, so you can easily take a third of a foot, or half of it, or a quarter of it. Those are easy to understand measures. Same with temperature. We basically go by 10s 30s = winter jacket and gloves/hat 40s = winter jacket 50s= light jacket 60s = sweater 70s = awesome 80s = hot 90s = drink water Compare that to celsius, where +8 vs +12 makes a big difference. All temperatures you will encounter _in daily life_ are roughly between 0 and 100 in F. No need for negatives, which people have trouble grasping. Distance too -- most people drive 60 mph on the highway a mile a minute. So if something is 25 miles away, you'll get there in 25 minutes. This makes even more sense since our interstate highway exits are numbered based on miles, so exit 8 is 2 miles away from exit 10. Notice the benefit next time on 495 when you see the digital sign saying "I-95 15 miles, 15 minutes" and you'll know traffic is flowign smoothly since that's a mile a minute. Oh, and it would cost over a trillion dollars to convert the US to metric, with little benefit. Heck, ever looked at paper in Canada? They use metric yet their standard paper measures 8.5" x 11". Maybe we should be lecturing them to move to A4 sized paper in mm. |
Because we don't want to, thanks. Bye. |
OP, I'm honestly intrigued by all of your rage against the standard system. Where does it originate? |
No one cares about brits driving on the left. It’s just such a minor thing for people to go back and forth. There’s no reason to change. Also, people like my Dh who work with labs easily use the metric system. |
Military is metric... Except navy which still loves nautical miles and knots. 😁 |
Sorry, but Fahrenheit wins. Fahrenheit: 0 degrees - very cold 100 degrees - very hot Celsius 0 degrees - cold 100 degrees - dead Kelvin 0 degrees - dead 100 degrees - dead |
Are you a robot? |
We're in the middle of a Pandemic, rapidly spreading to the EU from England.Don't you think we could be doing something more productive like helping out feeding the poor, assisting churches and the salvation army than arguing about stuff like this? |
If I had a stick that I said was 0 meters long you would call me crazy. If I had a stick of 0C, you wouldn't think twice about it, despite the insanity of 0 representing a positive quantity of something. |
You need a scale to bake with a metric based recipe, did you use one? |
Yep, same here-I probably learned that from a SchoolHouse Rock episode! |
I agree with the first poster. The F scale makes intuitive sense. My cousins who live in a metric country like how the 50sF means you need a light jacket, the 40sF means you need a heavier jacket, etc. For everything else, I wish we’d switched to metric. |
Why aren’t you doing this? No you’d rather just argue with others about what they post online in anonymous forum. |
Ha! I remember this too. |
