NYC Public Schools for Middle and HS?

OP you know your kid. Are they very innocent and introverted? If so, go for the suburbs. If they are outgoing and resilient and adventurous, go for the city. It is quite simple.

I went into 7th grade as a foreigner from Europe and my parents had this choice. They went with Greenwich Ct while my dad worked in the financial district in Manhattan.

I have been plotting out escape back to NYC for five years now, checking inside schools and weighing the odds. It may never happen, but I'm ready. I've heard it can be easier to get into some schools on an odd year point of entry.

You took the words out of my mouth exactly. Litearlly have been plotting my return to NYC for 5 years. My kid is in preschool and am thinking about the future - in terms of schools. By getting into some schools do you mean public schools? Just trying to figure this all out.

Unless you have $80k / year to spend on private you'll be looking for public schools

Do you research on www.insideschools.org
In NYC unlike DC you do not have to depend on a lottery. If you find a school middle school you like you can apply but you can also follow up and if the school has space they can take your child no matter where you live in NYC.
We live in Flatbush Brooklyn and my daughter attends a school in Park Slope 85 percent of students are on or above level.

PP, can you tell us which school?

You can also try the less expensive option of a Catholic school (I have heard they are @ $20k/year) or the free option of a good charter school (which will be lottery).

There are so many wonderful public high school options (and middle schools). Just try and step out of the rat race and realize their are specialized arts schools, pre-college programs (bard), schools in the heart of the theatre district focused on Broadway, schools for tech (lots of the specialized schools), museum schools, airplane mechanic schools (for real). You can get up to 3 high school options LaGuardia, specialized, and regular. One kid had two great choices and the other two (one is a senior in high school and the other college). Just embrace it and try not to stress and realize how lucky you are to have so many choices.

I feel like NYC has great elementary and high schools but the middle school situation is a cluster. We sent our child to private school for middle school because of this.

I will say, it takes work and persistence but there are a few good middle schools out there.
