School-specific plans

DC is NOT going back. No matter how much the Ward 3 parents whine. If LCPS can't make it work - the numbers are getting scary.

It sucks - I hope we can go back in March in some capacity

Does “being absorbed” into other classes not strike you as unfair to both the absorbed and absorbing students?!

I don’t understand how that problem always gets dismissed as with a wave of a hand, as though solving a problem for 11 people justifies any amount of burden placed on lots of other people.

Yes it does strike me as unfair. But there is no way to solve this in a fair way for everyone.

DC is *only* discussing going back in February, at the earliest, at this point. There is no discussion about going back now. We will get a peak in early/mid-January post-holidays and then should have a month to get things under control pre-needing to make the call.

I have doubt that we’ll go back at all this school year.

+1

The plans schools are coming up with are so sparse in some cases (only class on Wednesdays, only in person for special SEL events, etc.)

I teach at a high school and I just don’t see how the logistics of 25% returning would work. Maybe elementary schools can figure it out, but high school students with totally different schedules from one another will end up sitting in a classroom on a computer learning virtually while their in person teacher teaches virtually from the classroom. Or you have history teachers all of a sudden teaching history, biology and algebra II which certainly doesn’t help students learn.

I got a grade-level survey for upper elementary asking about three options - 100 percent in person; four half-days per week or two full days per week. I have the impression that the school is entertaining the possibility of a hybrid model for all students who want to go back. This is just a hunch, but I am wondering if DCPS is pushing schools to adopt hybrid models for Term 3 in accordance with families' demand. Maybe DCPS is putting it on the principals to make it happen, but then holding them accountable rather than having a city-wide mandate. This would be easier to achieve politically because DCPS could say that it came from the schools, and it may make it easier to bypass the union. It is also possible that the grade-level team at my child's school is simply a very forward-thinking one. Personally half-days makes a lot of sense to me. Though logistically half days are more difficult with drop-off and pick-up, they might make sense learning-wise. One could even imagine a teacher teaching a distance learning class in the morning and an in-person class in the afternoon, so that everyone keeps the same teacher. Distance learning is currently only synchronous for half of the day anyway with the homeroom teacher, and specials are asynchronous. Quality would actually increase for DL learners, because the class-size would be smaller in that case. DL versus in-person preference I think splits down the middle 50/50. If the kids could come to school having already eaten lunch that would take out a major potential risk for transmission, because that is when the kids take off their masks. Maybe before-care could be provided. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that teachers might get vaccinated in February. They are not the first priority to be vaccinated, but I believe that they are in the second group. This might help in opening the schools as well.

Of course there is. Hybrid. A zillion schools are doing it.

And a zillion schools are canceling it too. Whine that DCPS didn't do it sooner - and hindsight is always 20/20. but unlike other places we have lunatics constantly coming to our city unmasked and bringing their germs.

patient zero rudy is siting in Georgetown right now - yes the people caring for him have PPE, sense, etc. but what about his minions who come and go and grab and uber, go get take out, or force themselves to eat i, etc.
