Anyone have a "young" 7th grade boy?

OP here. Thank you so much to all the PPs. Maybe it is just my circle, but I feel like my sweet boy was left behind when everyone else got on a speeding train. I appreciate all the suggestions and will look into them!

If you a comfortable with it in terms of COVID, I would suggest trying an activity where he can meet some new kids in person - like boy scouts or a low-key outdoor rec sport (we have rec futsal outdoors during the winter where I live in Alexandria). And I would not rule out the possiblity that he can make friends with some kids who are "in the middle." My son is in 7th, and would probably fit that category. He has friends who still like legos and pretend play, and friends who like sports and video games.

What's wrong with Legos? My 7th grader IS a big gamer and into Fornite etc. and it's hard to say no because it is a legitimate way for him to connect with his buddies in this Pandemic.

However, he also still builds Lego kits and I try to encourage that as much as possible in order to limit the gaming.

Give the counselor a list of your son's interests, and ask if they know any other kids whose interests align, that your son could connect with. Some middle schools are offering lunch bunches and other ways for kids to meet each other. The *only* issue I see in your post is your DS needing to find some buddies.

+1

I’m so glad people are being sane!

My DC's middle school has online after school clubs. The Minecraft one is really popular, which surprised me because I thought kids were aging out of it, even though my DC still played. Those kids have their separate chats and things going outside the school sponsored activity, so they're "meeting" new friends.

Minecraft is so versatile that you don't really age out of it. You just learn how to do more interesting things with it, especially if you are into coding. College kids are still into it.
