Amazon Fire for elderly mom -- decent choice?

I found the Fire’s interface really difficult to use/understand. And it’s slow. I think an iPad is a better choice, personally. My grandmother uses hers to email her kids and read the Washington Post. She can also accept FaceTime calls.
