I am intrigued by your thoughts on children born in the US to parents not raised in the US. I only knew one person growing up who was allergic to peanuts (and raw eggs and shellfish) and she was born in the US to parents from Korea.

The medical establishment is trying to figure out why we have a higher incidence of peanut allergies now than when we were kids. When my daughter was born 5 years ago, the recommendation was to not even eat peanuts if you were nursing and that kids couldn't have peanut butter until a certain age. The AAP has recanted that recommendation and admitted that they had NO evidence to support it. Personally, I couldn't last more than a week without peanut butter, so I ate lots of it while nursing. And my daughter had her first peanut butter cookie or sandwich before she was a year old. Didn't cause an allergy. So are people who indulge in peanut products less likely to develop a peanut allergy?

As for raw or roasted.... good question. I would guess that the allergy tests are done with some sort of extract from a raw peanut though.

I feel for the parents of kids with horrid allergies. It must be hard to manage without smothering them.

I am from Russia, and didn't even really know about allergies until I came here to the US. I am sure they exist there, but obviously in a much (MUCH) smaller subset of the population. It really doesn't seem like much of a health concern over there, really. Russians don't eat a lot of peanuts though (do eat other nuts, walnuts in particular were very common place).

I have a cousin now in Italy, born and raised in the U.S. She is amazed at the focus on nut allergies in the U.S. We're only 40.. neither of us recalls it being much of an issue growing up.
