I think that's a no brainer - homeschool. Can't think of anything more pointless than DL in PK. If you are educated yourself, you do PK primarily for the socialization and the childcare. The "academics" are easy to cover at home. Especially if he hates it, it's potentially harmful for him and I wouldn't put him through it. |
I agree with this, but I'm just afraid that I will be kicking myself if I unenroll, and then it turns out they actually have a decent plan to start in-person school in the spring. |
I understand. I think what I would do is do the minimum log on every day just to satisfy whatever requirements they have, but don't make him sit in front of the computer or do any "assignments" that he doesn't want to do. |
Our DL experience has been extremely manageable, and my prek3er is enjoying the experience, so I personally wouldn’t. However, every experience and child is different. Go with the gut instinct. |
It's fine and the teacher is really trying, but I'm very close to unenrolling and finding a robust daycare/private preschool. Any suggestions not far from Shaw? |
We did two weeks ago. He wouldn’t get on DL and I was sick of fighting him. He’s loving doing workbooks, reading and playing. |
DL PK is just a program to keep the teachers employed. It serves almost no other purpose. Don't feel obligated to help them keep enrollment up. |
this. unless you have the unicorn kid/teacher combo where it’s really working, the vast majority of PK kids probably shouldn’t bother with DL anymore. Certainly not stress about it!!! It may have made sense as a short stop gap or maybe a very short daily lesson (like 10-15 minutes). Beyond that, it’s a complete joke that runs counter to literally everything we know about what preschoolers need and how they learn. All PK teachers and aids should be supporting K and 1st instead now. |
Definitely follow your instincts. I’d inquire too if there’s a middle ground. We effectively pulled our Ker out of DL last spring. Each week we’d send the teachers photo/video evidence of what she did, and 2-3x she had a short one-on-one with a teacher so they could verify progress. |
Which one please? We just tried this but now they’ve closed too ![]() |
We unenrolled our five year old from a (very good) DCPS K and sent her to a private PreK- 1st grade Montessori program that’s in-person. It’s only been 2 weeks but best thing we’ve done this pandemic. She loves it, is finally learning letters/numbers and making reading progress. We are finally able to work and avoid fights with her about staying logged in or at least in the same room as her laptop. Plus older sibling can focus better now that the house is quieter.
I’m now feeling silly we stuck with DL as long as we did. |
