How long did your cats live?

Lost one at 3 from a disease I can’t remember the name of. One is going strong at 14. The other is a super senior at 21!

One passed away at 13 from hyperthyroid. We did the medication but it topped working and we elected not to do the surgery. 😢 His personality really was a factor in these decisions; he hated taking the medication and would have haaaaated the surgery situation. 😢

Two are currently 14yo and one has slow-moving, low grade intestinal lymphoma, for which he takes daily meds (chemo and prednisone) but his personality is really laid back and takes the meds no problem; it has kept him alive almost 2.5 years so, fingers crossed!

Our 15yo girl’s kidneys are failing and other than switching to the KD food we are not going to do anything more than that (sub Q fluids etc) as she would hate that and not tolerate it well. We are kind of easily along with kitty hospice with her as she slowly loses weight but still appears happy and active.

Lost the sweetest angel at only 8 due to a cancerous tumor. Nothing I could do except keep him comfortable. That is the only cat I’ve lost so far and man was it hard. My other one is only 6 now and I hope he lives for a long time!

22 years. A stray my husband brought home from his grandmother's hometown. Love of his life. She made mind better too.

My previous cats have lived to be 20, 19 and 21! We have been lucky.

Do you mind sharing the results of the lab work?

Just lost ours at almost 14. Suddenly started looking thin and vomiting a lot. Vet ran bloodwork and we had an ultrasound done. Nothing specific stood out but vet thought inflammatory bowel disease, and we started steroids. Sadly, cat passed away almost three weeks after starting steroids.

Just lost my cat at 15.5. I really thought we had another good 3 or 4 years. All of a sudden we noticed he wasn’t eating as much. We moved his bowl closer to his bed, thinking he couldn’t do the stairs. He declined really fast and the vet said feeding tubes at that age and in his condition would just prolong suffering. Still don’t have an underlying cause, though likely a cancer or other underlying problem. I am heartbroken. He was a great cat.

My childhood cat died at 10 of some sort of abdominal cancer.

Another one got put down around 8 as she was declining (pooping herself and very irritable)

The cat my mother got afterwards is now almost 13 and starting to slow down some.

I had two litter mates. One got put down at almost 7 due to an aggressive mouth cancer. Her sister is still going strong at almost 14.

Ours just died at 11. She had some suspicious blood work that was probably cancer but the vet never saw any tumors.

17, 20 and 10 years. The one who only lived 10 years was not that smart and got himself hit by a car.

For those whose cats lived 19+ years, what do you attribute it to? How often did they see the vet? Did you do treatments that prolonged their lives?
