Opinions on pacifiers, please.

Pacifiers get me from 6:00 - 6:30 every AM. DD sleeps in halo next to my bed and i can just reach over and offer paci. I am v. thankful for that 30 minutes, esp. this last week with daylight savings.

With our first, we used a pacifier only for naps/bedtime. We only associated it with sleep and not with comfort. We probably could/should have cut the habit between 12 and 18 months, but had no problem dropping it around 24 months when we told her that big girls didn't need pacifiers, and that it was going away in one week. She was also weaned off bottles/nursing by 12 months.

Every kid is different, so I'd introduce it for sleep, and then let her keep on using it until it doesn't look like she'll use her thumb as a replacement (unless that age is 2+)

Pacifiers are supposedly helpful in reducing the risk of SIDS.

I say do it. I had the same issue with first baby and lactation consultant suggested pacifier. I think pacifier was a huge help in getting her to sleep through the night at 4 months. I never had any breastfeeding issues, pacifier-related or otherwise.

She used the pacifier for a long time, til almost 3 years old. Towards the end, I was starting to regret it because I thought we'd never get rid of it, but one day she just hid them and I couldn't find them and I said that's it, no more pacis, and it was just... fine. She just went about her life with no paci's, just like that.

I wish we could've gotten my second baby to use a pacifier. I see in hindsight it makes life a lot easier.
