Outbreaks in Schools

They need to test 1-2 times a week, not twice a month.

MoCo has 2 cases out of many schools open.

I wonder what the requirements are for reporting since I know that both St John's and Stone Ridge are going to all virtual this week because of cases.

I have a neighbor who teaches at Stone Ridge; she said they’re moving back to virtual because of rising numbers in MoCo, not because of specific cases.

Because they don't routinely or randomly test kids that are often asymptomatic this data isn't that meaningful.

It’s unfortunate this is not done so we could have reliable data. Right now the lack of testing makes many believe there’s no virus when it’s the opposite.

There are no requirements for public reporting, which is one of the reasons teachers are reluctant to go back. I believe WaPo did a story a few weeks ago about this exact issue. There are no reporting requirements for any DC area district except Loudon.

That’s not true. Schools are required to report cases to the health department and the health department has the ability to shut individual schools down, they can’t impose a blanket ban on all schools, though.

Also, Stone Ridge didn’t close because of an outbreak. There is a lot of misinformation from the public out there.

But you are right that there is no requirement for the state to publicly report the information they receive. It appears that they are starting to do that here.

This isn't true. a Junior had a Halloween party that her parents let her host. Students were infected so the school was closed.

Hi Janis.

That is not true. All suspected cases are reported to DMH. That’s why DMH has received over 150 reports. https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/covid19/reopening/requirements/nonpublic-schools.html

It seems that there was a party, but it doesn’t sound like there have been any confirmed cases. The school seems hyper ready to shut down and extremely resistant to open in the first place. Parents appear livid on the boards.

Only reason there aren't confirmed cases is they don't test.

Or no one at the party had it. I know it may be shocking to believe, but that is a very real possibility. It doesn’t mean it’s smart to have a party, but the infection rate in Montgomery County, especially in certain zip codes (and the area where the party was likely held was most likely in that zip code), is still quite low (especially looking back a few weeks). So no, that’s not the only reason that an infection might not have been confirmed. That’s not an appropriate conclusion to make at all especially since you have no knowledge of who was or wasn’t tested from the party.
