Consider a "cookbook" called The Kitchen Survival Guide which is really great for those with zero cooking experience (e.g., has "How to Boil Water" lol).

Mini keurig $80-$100

Reusable silverware - this has been important since the dining halls are largely using plastic picnic ware and there is a lot of grabbing your meal to go and eating outside. There are fun colors and sets - rainbow, rose gold, all black, etc. Most sets come with straws and a carrying case. $15-$20

Origami 3 Shelf Folding Rack from Container Store $70ish

Small umbrella

Waterproof cover to go over the back pack. This is the gift that they call and say thank you for.

Portable battery pack. We bought one that was about $40 and is one unit. 3 different types of chargers in one device. Charges phone and computer with no extra cords to carry.

Charging station for the desk. Nice for friends to be able to plug in and charge without taking up a precious outlet.

Small projector - we got one that streams Netflix, Amazon, et al. It gets used a lot.

If there's a chance the kid might be a plane flight away, only choose smaller items. Bigger or heavier items will be best purchased at the destination.
