What's your car payment?

Or, a $57,600 vehicle on a 96-month loan

Unless you put $25k down on this vehicle, you are not going to pay it off in 6 months by paying $600 a month.

OP, we typically buy used cars that we can pay cash for. But a few years ago, I bought a splurge vehicle. Our payments were $640 a month for 5 years and we might have put down around $10k, but I don't remember. Also, we bought a $20k vehicle earlier this year and pay $400 a month on it on a four year loan.

Will be paid off 6 months from now, we've had it for 3.5 years and been paying.

I don't like to go above $400 over 48 months...but for my next car, I might need to. My current car needs a new catalytic converter and transmission - repairs will be around $3500...on a car that is only worth about that (if I get it fixed.) I don't have a lot of discretionary income since we just needed a new roof (leak) and we had to get several appliances that all crapped out at the same time. This is for a $24k with very little down (but hopefully a low interest rate due to an excellent credit score.)

As PP said, cars are expensive. If you’re worried about the $600 monthly payment then start saving now and wait a few months. You can put that savings towards your down payment and get a lower monthly cost.

Of course, but he wants what he wants.

At current interest rates and assuming you have reserves and income to support a car payment, I don't see any shame in financing. Just don't overspend.

$667/mo.

How you pay for it is immaterial (whether you pay cash or finance). A $600 car payment is around a $35,000 car, or about the average price of a new car today. Nothing to get excited about IMO. Sounds like you just don't want him to buy a truck. What if he wanted to buy a $35,000 minivan? Would you care?

$600 was for a lease. And yes I would care about a minivan because I hate minivans.

I have purchased my last 5 cars with cash.

$194 a month for a Kia Soul. They're not glamorous, but it's just the right size and I like driving it.

Honestly, if I were a lesbian I’d get a Soul, I’d put a coexist sticker on it too.

Subaru Forester, $450/month, one year left of payments. Can't really see paying cash or paying it off early when interest rate is so low.
