Best way to get rid of thick ice on steps/sidewalks?

OP here. Well, perhaps I've gone and done the wrong thing after all. I used warm/hot water (combined with lots of kicking with my boot), brushed it down and put de-icer on it. It looks quite good now, but perhaps it won't turn out so good tomorrow? Oh well!

Take your garden spade and start chopping thru it. Along with ice melt on what doesn't come up.

Well, maybe if you swept away all the water and put the de-icer on it. You might be OK.

I definetly think the secret to de-icer is to put it on first thing in the morning and let the sun help. It also helps to go out in a few hours and shovel up the slush and reapply (if it is that thick).

Do NOT - repeat - do NOT let the shoveling neighbor try to handle it!

Sand is your best bet.

You definitely need a real shovel - a good solid garden edger one, not an aluminum show shovel.

This is an example of what I was talking about with an ice scraper. You can chop by striking from the top, but if you run it along the pavement parallel to the pavement you can pop the ice up off the surface from underneath.

did it work op?

OP here - yep, it worked fine (warm/hot water, sweep with brush, then cover with de-icer - plus lots of kicking with my boot!). Thanks for all the advice. Hopefully the post-lady will be happy next time (although she didn't come today ... ?).

OP here - yes, thanks, one of these would definitely have been a lot better on my boots!
