Just like typical kids, I bet OP's DS is throwing names without really knowing what he wants. |
| OP - keep in mind there are 1000s and 1000s of "solid" students applying at the same time. |
|
My kid's safeties are Pitt (accepted recently with rolling decisions), Indiana University, Purdue and JMU. Since it sounds like you are in Maryland, what about UMBC and St. Mary's? Tulane is not a safety anymore.
|
Coming out of MoCo magnets, my kids used UMBC/St. Mary's as safeties but treated UMCP as a target even with top stats |
| Surprised that his safety is a while other type of school. There are lower tier privâtes that would be more similar to Bucknell and BU than UMD. Why the discrepancy? I would think it will only add to his disappointment if he has to go to his safety. |
Great suggestions. |
| Villanova? |
I think this is a great suggestion for target. But, very far from safety level, with an acceptance rate in the upper 20s. |
| Providence College for an almost-safety, maybe low match. But again, depends on what OP is looking for exactly. |
| Of course we are all BSing here since OP hasn't posted her DC's stats. Wasting time I think. |
|
My son had BC as one of his targets...ultimately ended up at his first preference reach school.
His safeties were Villanova, Fordham, and Maryland. It depends on OP's kid's stats...I did not see them posted here. |

OP here.
Thank you for the feedback. Stats are 1430 SAT and weighted GPA of 4.55 (regular GPA 3.8). He plays sports (not recruit level) and has plenty of extracurriculars as well as 4s on APs. Looking at math or stem type major. |
A lot of magnet students go to UMD as their first pick. |
UMD is definitely not a safety for him. |
OP, he is a solid student but UMD is not a safety for him. He will probably get in but, with those stats, it's not a sure thing. |
