Public school kids falling behind

It hasn’t been our experience. My kid started 9th grade in a private school this year. He spent all his years in public school before this. He is taking the highest level Math offered in 9th Grade ( honors Algebra 2/ trigonometry). Most of the 9th graders taking this class are transfers from other schools. So far his grades are even better in English and World History which I am truly surprised as I thought he may have been behind private school kids Who gets a lot of feedback but it doesn’t seem like. Waiting to see his first progress reports and comments from teachers on the first 6 weeks of work.

Same here. DCPS--->elite DC private last year.
All A's at new private and in highest math group.

Mississippi, for instance, typically ranks at or near the bottom in performance metrics. They've largely returned to in-person school. Will be interesting to see if they move up the ranks at all.

The OP's question is about middle and high schoolers. Its easy to make up for the gap in elementary school kids versus middle and high school where it is very hard to make up for the lost time.

They aren't falling behind because of DL. My kid is in private school and he only goes to school once a week. Public schools educate the masses. Private schools educate students who meet their minimum standards and can afford the tuition. Most private school parents are motivated and educated. Does that describe some public school parents? Yes, of course but it has been shown that educational attainment in a child is highly correlated with the mother's educational level. More highly educated parents equals more highly educated children. You prioritize what you value.

My kids will fall behind in sports, for sure. I'm not concerned about falling behind academically. Our DL program is strong. (MCPS)
