| Awesome trees if you want to block out your neighbor, I hear at the start they look weak but then grow super fast. |
| An update, in the last 4 months since I posted, the green giants have grown at least another 6 inches taller still look bare as hell. |
Green giants are fast growers relatively, but you still need to think in "tree time". Also, there's the saying that I've found to be thematically true...in year one they sleep, in year two they creep, and in year three they leap. Plus, growth is kind of exponential. They'll push out a bit, then the following year growth pushes out on top of that previous growth, and so on. I'd also recommend using something like Vigoro tree fertilizer in early March to help power the spring/summer growing season. |
| People will sell you larger trees because they know you want a big tree, fast, but it’s better to get a smaller container tree and give it time. It will be healthier and probably just as big after five or ten years. |
Been putting this: Miracle-Gro Tree & Shrub Plant Food Spikes. Is that the same or get a different type? |
It's probably the same nutrients, but I really prefer granules over the spikes because I can feed the wider root mass. In fact, I did quite a bit of online reading this past year that suggested using granules about a month after the first frost to feed the roots over the winter. "Rather than put on new foliage growth, the roots of established trees or shrubs take the nutrients from the soil and apply them to important health-promoting functions, such as disease resistance and root development. The excess nutrients are stored in the roots and become immediately available when needed for new growth in spring." https://www.growingagreenerworld.com/fall-fertilization-for-established-trees-and-shrubs/ |
