Should I pay $80 for a prenatal consult with a pediatrician?

No

Haha no. Also, like, you don't really know what your baby is going to be like or what you're really going to be like as parents, so how will you really judge how much you mesh with a pediatrician?

Go there for the first few appointments and then switch if you don’t like it. There’s a pediatrician on practically every corner.

You are taking up their time so why shouldn't you pay?

You shouldn't pay cause it is an acquisition cost. Each patient gets them a lot of money.

Personally we went to info sessions hosted by pediatrician's offices for new parents to see what we liked, and the pediatrician's office could still offer this online. It would be a lot cheaper for parents and help you decide if you like them. In lieu of this I would check reviews, and see if something is important to you.

I asked the pediatrician's about alternate vaccine schedules and whether they would be willing to work with parents on it, mine were but I never changed anything. I wanted to hear that the pediatricians will listen/talk to the parents more than anything else.

If you are looking at pediatricians in the DC area I bet you could get a lot of your questions answered on here, or nextdoor.

I did the same to weed out people willing to cater to quacks. I'm not sitting in a waiting room with a measles vector whose mom thinks Thieves Oil is medicine.

If they are the closest to you, I'd just pick them with no consult. There is no reason to consult a pediatrician ahead of time, and this is why you are being to pay $80. Because the doctor is OVER IT.

Re-evaluate if you have a medically challenged child. If not, most any old doctor will do.

Correct
In some European countries the baby doesn't need a pediatrician shots and check ups are done at a health clinic.

I nearly started to mock my pediatrician when she needed to look at a chart to tell me that my baby is not obese. As if I didn't know that and as if that is why she spent so many years in med school

B/c a lot of medical practices (orthodontist, pediatricians, and the like) typically have free consults. Op was surprised this particular pediatrician doesn't follow this hence the post.

Come to think of it, a lot of industries have free consults - have you never gotten a free quote on car repair, roof, deck, (and the list goes on) before?

Most do not. Stop griping. Pay or go elsewhere.

I would not.

I wouldn’t pay it or do a pre-consult anywhere unless you have unusual needs (Ex. history of medical trauma, baby is known to have special needs, you have a “unique” approach to science/medicine that you want accommodated etc.)

If you’re just a normal FTM expecting a healthy baby I’d make your decision based on the info available on the website, from friends or local FB pages. If the website is vague and/or you have high deductible insurance you could always ask them to email you more info about their practice or a list of non-medical fees they charge.

I wouldn't pay. I've never heard of that before. What do you hope to learn at the consult, OP?

Most places don’t have a free consult? Of course they do.

I think she regards me as a very conscientious parent as she remembers the thoughtful questions I asked during our first meeting when I was pregnant with our first child. I would easily pay $80 or more to choose her again.

It depends on your questions, I think. And how involved you expect to be in your child's health and wellness.

How involved you expect to be in your child’s health and wellness? What the heck do you mean by that? Also your anecdote is irrelevant since you found the doctor you love without having to fork over an extra $80 that no one else is charging.
