Infant Carrier Help

Thanks for the link on the infantino. I was the PP who is using a hand me down, but it is like a backpack type, a mini bjorn and not a pouch/sling, so his head is at my upper chest. I am assuming its okay (i am always sure that DC has a clear airway)....

wow, thanks for the info on infantino, I had no idea about the bag slings being so unsafe. Are there any safety issues with other types of slings/carriers?

Look no further than the Ergo.

I'm the pp.

Just the bag slings that I can think of. That is a very important one, obviously.

Beco did recall an older version of the butterfly to change a clip at the shoulder to a slightly more secure version, as some older babies were able to undo it if the parent wasn't paying attention. That version is long gone, though, so shouldn't be a problem. They make good quality carriers. The internal harness is also nice if you want to learn to put your baby on your back easily.

If your carrier is more bjorn like with your baby high as you mention, not a suffocation risk at all. You want baby "close enough to kiss". I'm not personally a fan of the carrier as I much prefer other options for both comfort and baby's hips -- but if it works for you two that's just fine.

pp yet again, sorry..

One thing I'd mention re: safety issues with other carriers is to make sure that if you have a pouch sling it is properly sized. People tend to think a too big pouch is a correct fit -- do not size up. It should be somewhat difficult to get your baby into a properly sized pouch (though not impossibly difficult). Again, you want close enough to kiss -- and in ANY carrier you want to avoid baby's chin pressing against chest as that safety site I linked mentions.

Our son was about 10 pounds when he was born. Probably because he had shoulder dsytocia at birth and pretty bad reflux, he hated being worn in a cradle position, but loved being held vertically and facing our bodies in almost any wrap.

We had the best luck with the Maya wrap, the Moby, and especially the Ergo. We all really liked the Bjorn, too, but I hear they are not great for hip development.

Recommended: The Maya is terrific. Great for tucking into your bag when you're driving somewhere and want to put the baby on in a hurry when you arrive. The Moby is super-cozy for baby, but so long that it can be nerve wracking to put on in public. And the Ergo is just big, if perhaps the most comfortable of the bunch.

Not so great: The Baby K'Tan stretched so much it was unusable after 10 minutes. The Sears-style sling was too bulky (and ugly). And the Peanut Shell was cute but not very practical for our big, reflux-y baby--no good at holding him vertically, and he soon outgrew it.

I'm now pregnant with our second child and plan to get the new Ergo "heart to heart" infant insert to use from the start.

We use the Graco snugride car seat. It's heavy, but safe and easy. Also, aforementioned reflux-y baby would only sleep in an upright position for the first couple of months. We put it in the co-sleeper at night.

Good luck!

I can also recommend the Chico. We had the infant seat and the stroller and it was so nice when DD was little to just pop it in and out of the stroller and in and out of the car without disturbing her. Our DD was very large (95+ %tile right along) and we were still able to use it for a long time. I was rear-ended by a guy on a rainy day when she was in the backseat in that seat and she didn't even seem to notice (no crying or anything) even though it scared the crap out of me.

I love the peg prego. We are able to use the adaptor and put it on the city mini stroller and it works great. I looked at the Graco and I know parents on here love them but compared to the Peg and Chico (which I would have gotten as it is lighter than the the peg but it didn't have an adaptor for the city mini) they feel much cheaper and the fabric is much more prone to sweating etc as someone else mentioned. I wanted to be able to buy one stroller - didn't want to go the snap and go route as TI felt they aren't as sturdy as a regular stroller (universal ones) be I'm just picky as many love those too.
