Expectant and Postpartum Moms

I'm one of the posters who found Macri a little old school. Don't get me wrong - he was fine, and seemed like a very good doctor, like all of the GW docs. I was just a little put off when he to stop running and yoga in my second trimester when my normal doctor, Keller, thought the exact opposite. He and I just didn't click, which is part of the reason you go to a decent sized practice like that. I do think though that GW MFA is a fantastic practice, and that GW is a great hospital.

Macri is one of only 3 of the docs there who is a maternal fetal medicine doctor so as a high risk pregnancy patient I appreciate that he may be a little more cautious than the average doc (is doesn't have this additional training). I really liked him because I am the cautious type too! When he put me on bed rest at 36 weeks and started fetal monitoring at 30 wks I was very glad to have a doctor who took every precaution available. If you aren't high risk it might not matter to you but if you are a high risk pt I would recommend him.
FWIW the admin staff at GWU seem to adore Macri too. I am a regular PT of Larsen but when I wasn't able to get in with him for about four appts in a row near the end of my pregnancy, the admins were all extremely pro-Macri -- that I'd probably like him, that he was a super nice guy, that I'd like his bedside manner. He instantly set me at ease when he came into the exam room and introduced himself as "Chuck."
I just wanted to say that I've been seeing Dr. Keller so far the whole time (though will see Dr. Larsen next week), and I'm glad to hear good reviews of the other MFA docs. I'm at 33 weeks, and so far anticipate an uninduced vaginal delivery, so I'll be taking whoever is on call. Thanks for the good feedback that is putting me at ease about potentially meeting my delivery doc in the delivery room.
Just saw Dr. Macri for a consultation and did not have a positive experience. He is "old school," I think, and also just kind of aggressive/confrontational. Maybe it's because I told him I was a lawyer but he just would not let that go and made a lot of assumptions about me. I didn't sense much kindness from him. I will not be going back, I don't need to deal with that!
Funny -- I adore Dr. Macri, and when I told him I was an attorney, he didn't have any negative reaction at all, but just inquired into the type of work I do. I see Dr. Bathgate as my regular doc. She can come off as a little cool, but she really takes her time and listens.
I'm another lawyer who loves Dr. Macri! Both my husband and I are lawyers and he knew that and was nothing but great to us. I would not in a million years describe him as confrontational or aggressive. I'm very surprised by that description. I have several friends who have seen him and we all love him, and I would say he's relaxed and kind above anything else. Even the medical students love him.
I've seen Drs. Macri, Monthy, and Martinez at GW Medical Faculty Associates. They've all been totally fine. My favorite is actually Dr. Martinez, and I've scheduled all the rest of my appointments with her.

Yeah, I would never use the words confrontational or aggressive to describe Dr. Macri. He's a lot of things (quirky, a little odd) but neither of those things. I find him to be very caring actually and willing to accept my point of view on things, even if I'm wrong! In other words, he doesn't strong arm me into doing things but rather just gently explains his take on things. He's got a quirky sense of humor though that may not appeal to everyone.
I've also seen Dr. Bathgate and I think the pp is right--she can come off as standoffish and not warm & fuzzy but I think she's very smart and an excellent Dr. |
I agree! That is very, very strange! My husband and I are both Drs and I saw Dr. Macri. He was great and took excellent care of me through my high risk pregnancy. He was always available and took anything I said very serious. I might describe him as having a quirky sense of humor like the PP but aggressive or confrontational is the last word I would use to describe him. As PP mentioned I thought too he should have strong armed me more often (or at least my husband thought so). When I had a question about something (cord blood banking, etc) he always said I was an educated person and I could read the research and then we could talk about my opinion. It is very strange that was your experience.
Dr. Macri is amazing! I did not have him as a doctor personally but I trained under him at GW when I was in med school and he definatley knows his stuff is up on the academic side of things but also has great bedside manner. He is a good guy and if I was delivering at GW I would pick him
