What’s wrong with doing that?

UVA CS sucks.

My DC just graduated UVA CS (BA). Had offers at Microsoft, Google and Facebook. So if that's something that matters, I'd say it's a great school for CS.

For an undergrad its fine. You can’t beat the in-state cost. As long as it has strong recruiting, which I am sure it will

Very mature comment above. It might not be Carnegie-Mellon/MIT/Cal/Stanford quality but personally I don't think a good CS degree is even a needed ingredient to be a good programmer. Some of my best coders have been self taught. I got a CS degree at UVa and have been coding for 30 years. I did get an minor in MIS at the Comm School which I think was just as useful when it came to real world jobs. Plus, they have the new Data Science school.

Computer Science does not mean coding. Saying so proves the point the PP made about UVA CS. Besides, TJ grads are embarrassed to attend UVA especially for STEM when there are plenty of better opportunities w/ merit scholarships.

Yes even GMU grads get few offers from those companies to work at some random cities (including around here) as IT tech. How many go on to graduate schools at top CS programs (MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, CMU)? How many are SWE at those companies at their HQ/main office? How many go on to become quants at quant hedge funds or IBs?

Uhh there are plenty of schools cheaper than $40k/yr!! I guess that’s “cheap” on DCUM.

UVA CS does not have a strong recruiting.

Merit scholarships from which schools?

CS is in high demand (or has been, difficult to say these days), so I think it will be one of the most in demand majors from UVA and other schools. I would rely on the placement stats from UVA (and other schools) rather than what people say.

BA is probably the route that allows the most flexibility.

There is a very bored teenager posting nonsense in this thread.

Most TJ grads can't get into UVA.

Not true. Lots of TJ kids go to tech and uva

UVA, VT, and W&M get about 90% of the TJ kids that stay in state. However, number of kids going out of state has been increasing, though. 81 TJ grads went to UVA in 2015. This was down to 40 in 2020. 38 went to VT in 2015 and only 16 in 2020. 44 went to W&M in 2015 and 19 in 2020. (Typical percentage reporting is over 80%, so numbers may be somewhat higher.)

I think a lot of the top kids get good offers from strong STEM schools OOS.

About 300 TJ grads used to apply to UVA some years back but now I think only about 100 or fewer apply to UVA. Applications to UVA are way down.
Anonymous
That's not correct. 300+ still apply. The more recent change is that far fewer are admitted than in previous years.

Sorry to burst your bubble but TJ applications to uva plummeted in the recent years. Lot of people are delusional.

Yup. That PP doesn't have Naviance access.

Agree, According to Navisnce it didn’t seem like my kid had a great chance to get into UVA so he put his focus on other schools. Maybe fewer apply because a lot in previous years hadn’t been getting in
